Hotel Santa Clara Libre

The only hotel within the town center, this 10-story, mint-green high-rise is perfectly poised on the main square, Parque Vidal. Built in the 1950s in modernist style, it has not been kept in good repair. A general renovation is long overdue, for which reason most tour groups opt for the far nicer Hotel Los Caneyes, outside town, leaving this hotel to Cuban honeymooners. Still, you can't argue with the fine views over the city from upper-story rooms.

The tiny lobby has only meager furnishings. A single creaky elevator serves the entire hotel, and guests often find it quicker to take the stairs. There's a gloomy downstairs restaurant off the lobby. Preferable is the simple upper-story restaurant, which has fine views, although the menu at both restaurants is limited. An open-air bar adjoins. The basement disco gets packed on weekends, and the noise carries throughout the lower floors.

Its 132 air-conditioned accommodations are modestly furnished and a far cry from luxury. But they're comfy enough, and east-facing rooms enjoy views over the plaza. The wand plumbing here are erratic, and a hot shower is never guaranteed. Cleanliness is a concern here, from the dirty soft goods in guest rooms to the dirty tablecloths in the restaurant.
